Established in 2006 by Phil Barker and Brett Kappelle, Barker Kappelle Construction builds for every budget. The design-build firm specializes in residential additions, remodels, new construction and commercial contracting.
Phillip Barker is an experienced contractor from New Zealand with a project portfolio that extends to such faraway places as the Cook Islands, London and the Maldives.
Brett Kappelle is a skilled carpenter from California with sharp management skills and a knack for getting things done.
Together, Barker Kappelle have 40 years of combined experience in the construction industry.

As the office manager, Teri oversees the systems and routines that keep our operation running smoothly. She brings 16 years of experience working at First Hawaiian Bank to BKC, utilizing a thorough knowledge of accounting and resource management. Teri was born and raised in Kailua and is the proud mother of an 11 year old daughter. In her free time she enjoys paddling regatta, snowboarding, and visiting the outer islands.
Will is the lead project coordinator at Barker Kappelle, helping manage the day to day operations of construction projects. He has six years of project coordinating experience, which includes working closely with international clients. After graduating Cum Laude with a degree in economics from the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University, Will spent a year teaching economics and coaching swimming at a high school in Newark, NJ. In his free time, Will enjoys camping, buying vinyl records, and wood working. His favorite place to spend a Saturday is Sherwood beach.
Jessi has over seven years of experience with design and software management. After graduating from University of Hawai’i Hilo, she spent five years as a project specialist for a youth program, developing curriculum and teaching children and teens computer skills and safety. Outside of work, Jessi enjoys being involved with her hula hālau, participating in the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival, and assisting with the keiki program. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with family and traveling with friends.
Debbie has 20 years of experience working with construction building materials, and has in depth knowledge of cabinets and windows. She is key in the material selection, ordering, and delivery process. Debbie works with homeowners and architects to help custom taylor material orders to match homeowner goals and budget. Debbie was born in Kaneohe and lived in Hawaii all her life. In her free time, Debbie enjoys spending time with family. She has been blessed with several grandchildren to spoil.
Matt has managed projects ranging from remodels to multimillion dollar new homes for over 10 years. He started as a carpenter in 1987 and over the last three decades has developed an intimate knowledge of the construction process. Prior to moving to Hawaii in 2005, Matt spent 18 years as a finish carpenter on luxury homes in Hollywood and Beverly Hills. He relies on a broad range of experiences while overseeing BKC carpenters, subcontractors, and ensuring projects meet schedule and exceed exacting quality standards. Matt is the father of a 13 year old daughter, and in his free time enjoys surfing and planning snowboarding trips.
Ken has been building for 39 years and worked as a project manager for the last 25. Originally from New Zealand, Ken has built luxury homes and done commercial work in New Zealand, Japan, China, and Hawaii. Ken moved to Hawaii in 1999 and has a State of Hawaii ABC license. Ken has significant experience with site and foundation work. Some of his commercial project experience includes Board of Water Supply deep wells, State of Hawaii projects, and military projects. In his free time, Ken enjoys boating and fishing. Both Ken and his wife love football. They enjoy traveling and if they’re headed to the mainland there’s a good chance they’re on their way to a football game.
John has over 20 years of experience as a foreman. He started in construction in Ohio 25 years ago as a laborer, worked his way up to a carpenter and then to leading framing crews. His decades of experience ensure homes get built efficiently, cleanly, and are structurally sound. John has lived in Hawaii since 2013 and is the proud father of 4 children, including two serving as Navy Nukes. In his free time, John enjoys working on cars – especially his 2013 Ford Mustang GT twin turbo.
