Our mission is to provide our clients, sub-contractors and employees with the best experience in the building industry.

Established in 2006 by Phil Barker and Brett Kappelle, Barker Kappelle Construction builds for every budget. The design-build firm specializes in residential additions, remodels, new construction and commercial contracting.

Phillip Barker is an experienced contractor from New Zealand with a project portfolio that extends to such faraway places as the Cook Islands, London and the Maldives.

Brett Kappelle is a skilled carpenter from California with sharp management skills and a knack for getting things done.

Together, Barker Kappelle have 40 years of combined experience in the construction industry.

Teri Murakoshi
Office Manager

As the office manager, Teri oversees the systems and routines that keep our operation running smoothly. She brings 16 years of experience working at First Hawaiian Bank to BKC, utilizing a thorough knowledge of accounting and resource management. Teri was born and raised in Kailua and is the proud mother of an 11 year old daughter. In her free time she enjoys paddling regatta, snowboarding, and visiting the outer islands.

Matt Rubio
Project Manager

Matt has managed projects ranging from remodels to multimillion dollar new homes for over 10 years. He started as a carpenter in 1987 and over the last three decades has developed an intimate knowledge of the construction process. Prior to moving to Hawaii in 2005, Matt spent 18 years as a finish carpenter on luxury homes in Hollywood and Beverly Hills. He relies on a broad range of experiences while overseeing BKC carpenters, subcontractors, and ensuring projects meet schedule and exceed exacting quality standards. Matt is the father of a 13 year old daughter, and in his free time enjoys surfing and planning snowboarding trips.

Andreas Gaeta, D.Arch, Associate AIA
Project Manager/Superintendent

Andreas grew up in the construction industry, and worked in the trades for more than 10 years before pursuing his education at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2008. There, he received his Bachelors of Environment Design, as well as his Doctorate of Architecture. Andreas specializes in high-end residential design, and has been managing multimillion dollar custom homes for the last 6 years. His doctoral dissertation focused on the importance of clear communication within the field, and the value of the design build business model in today’s industry. In his free time Andreas enjoys paddling, crossfit, snowboarding and travel.

Will Gilbert
Project Engineer

Will is the lead project engineer at Barker Kappelle, helping manage the day to day operations of construction projects. He has six years of project coordinating and engineering experience, which includes working closely with international clients. After graduating Cum Laude with a degree in economics from the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University, Will spent a year teaching economics and coaching swimming at a high school in Newark, NJ. In his free time, Will enjoys camping, buying vinyl records, and wood working. His favorite place to spend a Saturday is Sherwood beach.

Edmound Ybarra, D.Arch
Project Engineer

Edmound has 6 years of Architectural Design experience, with three and a half of those years spent working on custom design build homes. He studied at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where he received a Bachelors in Environmental Design as well as a Doctorate in Architecture. He is skilled in using design programs such as Revit, AutoCAD, and Enscape. Outside of work, Edmound has coached football at Nanakuli High & Intermediate for over 12 years, and in his free time enjoys camping, fishing, diving, and watching movies with his family.

Jessica Botti
Project Coordinator

Jessi has over seven years of experience with design and software management. After graduating from University of Hawai’i Hilo, she spent five years as a project specialist for a youth program, developing curriculum and teaching children and teens computer skills and safety. Outside of work, Jessi enjoys being involved with her hula hālau, participating in the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival, and assisting with the keiki program. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with family and traveling with friends.


As Certified Green Professionals (CGPs) and graduates of Green Builder College, Barker Kappelle Construction, LLC., is a design-build firm with Hawaii’s environment in mind.
